Teams Mobile Gets Smarter: Browser Choice Prompts for Non‑Office Links

Microsoft is rolling out a new update to Teams Mobile on Android and iOS that changes how links are handled. Starting late February 2026, when users tap on non‑Office documents or PDFs, they’ll be prompted to choose which browser to open the link with.

What’s Changing

  • Prompt on tap: A bottom‑sheet pop‑up will appear, asking users to select their preferred browser.
  • Edge recommended: Microsoft Edge is positioned as the default choice thanks to:
    • Native Single Sign‑On (SSO) support
    • Built‑in Copilot integration
    • Enhanced enterprise security controls
  • Download prompt: If Edge isn’t installed, users will be prompted to download it before proceeding.

The rollout applies across Worldwide, DoD, GCC, and GCCH tenants, and is expected to complete within February 2026.

Admin Controls

The feature is enabled by default, but IT administrators can configure it via TeamsMobilityPolicy in PowerShell:

Policy NameAttributeValueBehavior
TeamsMobilityPolicyLinksInTeamsOfferBrowserOptionsEnables browser selection prompt
TeamsMobilityPolicyLinksInTeamsUseSystemDefaultsDisables prompt; uses system default browser

Admins can proactively set UseSystemDefaults in tightly controlled environments to avoid workflow disruption.

User Experience

  • End users can manage preferences directly in the Teams Mobile app under Settings → Links in Teams.
  • Microsoft confirmed no compliance concerns with the change, but organizations should review policies.
  • Microsoft will monitor user satisfaction (DSAT), Edge installation rates, and retention metrics during rollout.

Final Thought

This update reflects Microsoft’s push to balance user choice with enterprise security. By encouraging Edge adoption while still allowing flexibility, Teams Mobile is evolving into a more secure and user‑friendly collaboration tool. For organizations, the key takeaway is to review mobility policies early and prepare helpdesk teams for incoming queries.
