Microsoft Deprecates Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA)

Microsoft has officially removed the Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) command-line utility from all in-support versions of Windows updates as of March 10, 2026. SaRA was a free, scriptable tool widely used to troubleshoot issues with Office, Microsoft 365, Outlook, and Windows, running automated diagnostic tests to identify and fix common problems.

What Changed

  • SaRA removed: No longer available in Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11.
  • Replacement tool: Microsoft recommends migrating to the Get Help command-line tool (GetHelpCmd.exe), which offers similar functionality but with enhanced security infrastructure.
  • Capabilities: Like SaRA, Get Help can run diagnostics, provide step-by-step fixes, or guide users to Microsoft support.

Why the Change

Microsoft explained the move as part of efforts to secure and harden environments. While SaRA was effective, its infrastructure lacked the security enhancements now built into Get Help.

Administrators can run Get Help from the command line or via scripts (e.g., PowerShell) to troubleshoot remotely across endpoints — making it enterprise-ready.

Wider Deprecation Trend

SaRA’s removal is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy of retiring older tools and apps:

  • May 2025: Password autofill feature deprecated in Microsoft Authenticator.
  • October 2026: Microsoft Publisher scheduled for removal from Microsoft 365.
  • January 2026: Microsoft Lens PDF scanner app retired from Android and iOS, with full disablement by March.

Final Thought

The retirement of SaRA signals Microsoft’s push toward modern, secure diagnostic tools. For IT admins, the key takeaway is clear: migrate to Get Help immediately to maintain troubleshooting capabilities while aligning with Microsoft’s hardened security posture.
